The subject of this painting is traditional in the family that owned if from the 18th-century until 1960. Indeed, Shakespeare's works were both read and performed in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century. The earliest known translation of "The Taming of the Shrew" was published by Abraham Sybant in 1654.

Condition Report: Painted on a compound panel. There is a line of restoration running horizontally along the join. The varnish layer is very dense and hard to read through under UV light. Some touches of restoration to the faces of the seated man (Petruchio) and the lady (Kate), and to the lady's dress. Some lines reinforced.
