Dutch School (17th Century) Gathering firewood, circa 1660-70 Oil on panel 10-7x8 x 15-3x8 inches (27.6 x 39.1 cm) Property from a Private Family Collection, Dallas, Texas PROVENANCE: Private collection, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, circa 19th and early 20th centuries; Thence by descent to the present owner. The present winter scene is most likely the work of a Haarlem school painter, with stylistic reminiscences of such artists as Adriaen van Ostade, Phillips Wouwerman and Nicolaes Berchem. A work sharing some affinities with this panel is Berchem's Winter landscape with lime kiln in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, inv.xcat. no. 297. We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for his expertise essential to the cataloguing of this lot.

Condition Report: On stable, beveled panel. Perimeter of original panel has been shaved more thinly, with entire panel inserted into a wooden sub-frame. Minor frame abrasion at edges with a few small associated losses, stabilized beneath the varnish layer. Finely patterned craquelure throughout.
Under UV: heavily applied varnish fluoresces green.
