Dynastic III Cylinder Seal with Contest Scenes
Circa 2600-2340 BC. A rock crystal cylinder seal with contest scenes, the main scene a naked long bearded hero with waist-belt and horned cap, clasping with his left hand a goat upright standing on the hind hooves and turning back its head; behind it a similar goat in the same pose, but shown antithetically, is bitten in the neck by a standing up lion; behind this beast, on the left, there are two crossing mountain sheep and two crossing lions, of which the front one the naked hero attacks from behind. 9.6 grams, 21mm (1"). Property of a Middlesex collector; acquired on the London art market before 2000; formerly in an old English collection.
