EARLY AMERICAN TALL CASE CLOCK BY ABEL STOWELL, BOSTON

[ translate ]

The fine cherry tall case clock made by the Charleston, Worcester and Boston, Massachusetts maker Abel Stowell (born 1752, died 1818). The elegant cherry case is topped by the original delicate scroll cut openwork fretwork accented by three brass finials original to the clock's bonnet. Behind the arched door which is flanked by full turned columns is an original, untouched sheet iron dial with original gold enamels in high relief and hand painted Roman numeral chapter ring having Arabic seconds divisions, calendar readout and smaller seconds bit dial, all with the original hands. The dial, which is signed by the maker, fronts a weight-driven, striking, brass plate movement. The waist portion of the case is mounted with an arched door above the base section of the cherry box case which is raised on the original applied bracket feet.

Measures 89 x 19 x 10 inches.
