[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY] "Old Black Dog," Portrait Taken in Kansas
T. M. Concannon, Independence, Kansas. Circa 1870s.
Carte de visite portrait of a seated Native American man identified in a manuscript inscription as "Old Black Dog." He wears a dark shirt and necklaces and holds an elaborate tomahawk with a broad, angular blade. Feathers and other accoutrements extend across his chest and lap, giving the portrait considerable detail beyond the sitter's likeness.
The lower mount is printed "Taken by T. M. CONCANNON, Independence, Kansas." The period ink inscription on the reverse reads, in part, "commonly called / Old Black Dog, Doctor / A great Medicine / man," preceded by a phonetic rendering of his name. The annotation identifies the sitter by name and describes his role within his community.
