Description:

[ECONOMICS]
SMITH, ADAM. An inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations. Philadelphia: printed for Thomas Dobson, at the stone house, in Second Street, 1789. The first American edition. Three volumes, period American tree calf, all edges yellow. 6 3/8 x 4 inches (16.5 x 10 cm); viii, [9]-412 pp.; vi, [7]-430 pp.; [i-vi], [7]-387, [1], [55] pp. index. Binding rubbed and worn, gouge to the spine of volume 2, joints weak and holding on cords, generally a clean copy internally. Name of John Woods on front free endpaper.

Taken from the fourth London edition, this (stated as "A New Edition" on the title) is the first American publication of Smith's seminal economic treatise. It is of note that 1789 was the year of Washington's inauguration, and it is unquestionable that the availability of this American edition influenced the free-market economic path of the new Republic. Evans 22148; Sabin 82305; Kress B.1721; ESTC W12864.
