Property from a Private Collection, France
EDGAR DEGAS
1834-1917
SELECTED IMAGES

2 photographs, one printing-out-paper print of Julie Manet and one gelatin silver print of Christine and Yvonne Lerolle, mounted recto verso to the same card, extensive annotations in pencil and ink on the mount, circa 1895 (2)
each image: 6⅞ by 4⅞ in. (17.5 by 12.4 cm.)

Condition Report:
These two prints are slightly unevenly trimmed to the image, and mounted recto verso to the same card.

Printing-out-paper print of Julie Manet:
Grading this matte-surface printing-out-paper print on a scale from 1 to 10 - a 10 being a print that has rich, deep dark tones and highlights that retain all of their original detail - this print rates a 6. It exhibits a high level of detail, but it is slightly faded overall.

This print is in generally very good condition. There are a few scattered tiny dark deposits, possibly stray ink. When examined closely in raking light, a few scuffs and pinpoint-sized impressions are visible. There is a chip to the emulsion at the lower right edge and a loss at the upper left corner. It is lifting very slightly from the mount at the upper left corner.

The following is written in an unidentified hand on the mount: 'Contre [?] Julie Manet épouse de Ernest [Louis crossed out] Rouart fille de Berthe Morisot' in ink; and 'ds le miroir Degas photographe' and 'photo de Degas a conserver' in pencil.

Gelatin silver print of Christine and Yvonne Lerolle:
This print is in generally good condition. The surface of the print is semi-glossy with a few occasional matte areas. The coating appears to be stripped at the upper right edge and to have caused smudging on the mount. The left edge is slightly yellowed. When examined in raking light, a few scuffs, scratches, and creases are visible. There are some fingerprints near the edges. The corner tips are ever-so-slightly lifting from the mount.

The following is written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the mount: 'Yvonne Lerolle'; 'Christine Lerolle'; and 'même chemise / même noeud.' There is a strip of tape along the upper edge of the mount and an abrasion in the upper portion.

The mount measures 9 1/4 by 7 in. (23.5 by 17.8 cm.). There is scattered foxing on both sides of the mount. The edges are appropriately age-darkened and worn.
