Born in Hartford, CT and living most of her career in New York City, 1927-1959, Edith R. Abbot studied at the Norwich Art School with Alice V.V. Brown, at the Art Students' League in New York and with William Merritt Chase and Arthur Wesley Dow.

Abbot was a member of the National Association of Women Artists, American Association of Museums and the Arts Students' League, she exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists, National Association of Women Artists, Southern Vermont Artists, Argent Gallery (solo) in New York, American Artists Professional League and the National Association of Artists.

Abbot was associate professor of Art at Wellesley College (1905-15) and senior instructor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1915-1941). She authored The Great Painters (1927).
