Author:
Title: EERIE No. 5
Place Published:
Publisher:Avon [Indicia: Avon Periodicals, Inc.]
Date Published: February-March, 1952
Description:

Fair/Good (1.5). Cover detached, 2" spine split, tiny chips to spine ends, spine stressed and slightly rolled, mild center crease to covers and pages, nicks and edgewear (mainly to back cover), a few soil spots to pages. Cream to off-white pages. Cover: Sid Check. Art: Norman Nodel?, Mike Becker?, Ed Goldfarb, uncredited others. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. An incomplete .5 sold for $203 in August 2021, and a 2.5 sold for $174 in October 2021.

A mummy menaces a busty brunette on EC also-ran Sid Check's cover, one of his Wally-Woodiest efforts. Sex-crazed mummies were a recurrent pre-Code motif (see also: TFTC 33, Mister Mystery 8). Perhaps rapacious mummies resonated with Cold War readers due to their terrifying triple-threat of sex, death, and unassimilable foreign-ness — According to an online pontificator, the "mummy's revenge" trope hinges upon Western discomfort with the consequences of imperialism: "In tale after tale, the mummy—and, more broadly, the antique Egyptian—has indeed come to stand for a mysterious but also menacing Orient, which threatens to wreak a terrible vengeance upon those guilty of imperial transgression." — Nolwenn Corriou, "The Return of the Victorian Mummy: Alex Kurtzman's The Mummy (2017), A Modern Orientalist Tale." Journals.openedition.org.

A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.
