EGYPTIAN FRAGMENTS OF A GRECO-ROMAN CERAMIC FACE

Ca. 323 BC-395 AD. Graeco-Roman Period. Ceramic fragments of a face. These come from a sculptural head in the Classical style. They are decorated with red-ochre skin, and on one hair is visible in black. The eyes are inlaid with black and white glass giving them a reflective quality, and they are outlined with blue for the kohl. They are extremely life-like, and they could have come from a free-standing sculpture or a ceramic vessel with a face on the side. Size: L:Set of 2: 75 - 107mm / W:83 - 95mm ; 200g. From a London private family collection; formerly acquired on the UK art market in the 1960s - 1970s; thence by descent.
