[EINSTEIN] AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION OFFPRINT ISSUE OF EINSTEIN'S PROOF OF GENERAL RELATIVITY.
EINSTEIN, ALBERT. 1879-1955. "Erklärung der Perihelbewegung des Merkur aus der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie." Offprint from: Preussische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Sitzungsberichte, XLVII, 1915 [pp 831-839]. Publisher's printed orange wrappers, printed "Überreicht vom Verfasser" upper right of front cover.

ON THE PERIHELION OF MERCURY—ONE OF EINSTEIN'S MOST IMPORTANT PAPERS, VALIDATING HIS THEORY OF GENERAL RELATIVITY. Einstein's explanation of the perihelion of Mercury demonstrates general relativity's ability to predict and explain Mercury's seemingly erratic orbit around the Sun—an "anomaly" that Newtonian theory could not account for. This paper also provides the correct value for the bending of light by gravity, a value tested and proven true by the famous 1919 eclipse which empirically proved the truth of general relativity. Einstein himself was so excited by the theoretical results of this paper that he said it gave him "heart palpitations." This paper immediately precedes his epochal Grundlage (1916) publication, and the field equations here presage the field equations there. A World War I publication, it is thought that only a small number of these presentation offprints were produced, perhaps as few as 12. One of his most important papers, and extremely rare in offprint format. Weil 76.
