Description: 4to (offsetting on flylvs, some browning towards the margins). - Edition limited to 300 copies (n. 101) printed on Rives hand-made paper. Ill. with 12 b/w abstract woodcuts by Dorothy Shakespear and a front. by Robert Dill. One of the six books published by William Bird's press, under the editorship of Ezra Pound with the series title of "The Inquest into the State of Contemporary English Prose". - The Three Mountains Press was an important Modernist printer established in Paris in 1922 by the American journalist William Bird. Ezra Pound was its editor for a while, Dorothy Shakespear, one of only a handful of women Vorticist artists, was his wife. Bird had his diminutive shop on the Île Saint-Louis and produced small editions of work by Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, Ford Madox Ford, and others, all printed by Bird himself. "So small were his premises, in fact, that Sylvia Beach has recorded that when she went to call on him they had to converse on the pavement outside; there was no room for more than one in the printing office". When Bird eventually stopped his printing activities, the equipment was sold to Nancy Cunard, who used it at her Hours Press in Normandy. - Ref. Cave, The Private Press, p. 205.
