EMANUELE GAETANI, Francesco Maria (1720-1802). Della Sicilia Nobile. Palermo: Bencivenga, 1754-1759. [WITH:] Appendice alla Sicilia nobile. Palermo: Bentivegna, 1775.
First edition, scarceon the market (only two auction appearances in the past 20 years, RBH), of this important work tracing the history of the Sicilian nobility, illustrating its genealogies, titles, fiefs and family histories, while also providing a valuable account of the political and institutional history of the Kingdom of Sicily, together with interesting historical and geographical digressions on the various parts of the island. The work remains one of the principal reference works for the study of the Sicilian aristocracy and an indispensable source for genealogical and heraldic research on the island. The set is enriched by the only volume of the appendix published by the author, issued fifteen years later; the second volume appeared posthumously in 1897, edited by C. Crispo Moncada and A. Mango.
Three parts in 4 volumes, together with one volume of appendix, 5 volumes in total, folio (275 × 190 mm). Engraved vignettes on the title-pages, large folding map of Sicily at the beginning of the first volume, finely engraved headpieces, initials and tailpieces (the first volume lacking two text leaves, L2-L3; the second volume, containing the continuation of the second part, lacking the three portraits called for; foxing and occasional waterstaining). Elegant uniform contemporary full vellum, gilt titles and ornaments to spines. Provenance: contemporary manuscript annotations in the margins of the first volume of the second part. (4)
