Condition Report: 8/12/2019, 9:00 am: Regarding Lot 0304: EMIL FILLA (ATTRIB) CUBIST STILL LIFE PAINTING In my opinion, blacklight examination does not reveal evidence of inpainting or restoration. I observed grime to the surface of the painting and canvas commensurate with age, as well as some minor frame wear along the upper edge. The frame displays cracking and loss to the gesso molding.
We are offering this painting as attributed to Emil Filla. In our opinion, the work may be ascribed to the artist of the basis of style and signature. We do not have documentation from Narondi Galerie Praha (Prague, Czech), beyond the label on the back of the painting, to definitively confirm authorship. We feel that as an auction gallery we do not have the expertise to conclusively state authorship, and galleries in Prague would not offer further comment without examining the painting in person. In our email correspondence with Galerie Kodl in Prague, they stated that the painting “looks like [it] could be original,” but that they would “need to see [the painting] personally to confirm our opinion.” The painting was consigned to our gallery by a local collector. As stated in our listing, she purchased the painting in Austin, Texas in 1987 from the estate of Zora Molito (nee Zora Jarmila Vaclavikova, Prague, Czech Republic, c.1924-2011). Zora worked as a manager of rights and permissions for the University of Texas.
