Condition Report:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the old varnish, but appears to reveal some pin-prick retouchings to the network of craquelure, particularly in the sitter's torso, and some fine lines throughout the background. There are also some fine lines to disguise the network of craquelure in his face, and a loss measuring 2 x 2 cm. has been retouched in the upper right corner, and retouching to a restored damage in the centre of the upper margin approx. 1 cm. long. A U-shaped repaired tear has been retouched above the sitter's head measuring approx. 8 x 4 cm. In overall fair condition.
