EUGEN VON BLAAS | FAUST AND MARGUERITE IN THE GARDEN

[ translate ]

Property from a Private Collection, Canada
EUGEN VON BLAAS
Austrian
1843 - 1931
FAUST AND MARGUERITE IN THE GARDEN

signed Eugen Blaas (lower right)
oil on canvas
49¼ by 36⅛ in.
125.1 by 91.8 cm

Condition Report:
Not examined out of the frame. Lined. The surface presents well with bright colors. There is extremely faint, stable craquelure; a very few minor pin dots of accretion; a 2 inch faint horizontal varnish scuff near left upper edge; and frame abrasion along the upper and left edges.

Under UV: heavy varnish fluoresces green and unevenly in some areas. There are some fine dashes and very small areas of inpainting to the faces; a 1 1/2 inch area of inpainting on Faust's red tunic; and brushier areas of inpainting on Marguerite's neck, underneath her chin, on the head of the woman in the background and to some of the leaves at upper right. Additional sparse, finely applied dashes and dots of inpainting and some minor strengthening on the figure's clothing. Faust's legs are hard to read under the current varnish but there is possible older restoration there. A few isolated dots and dashes of inpainting in the background and on the ground.

In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report.
