[ translate ]

EUGÈNE-FRANÇOIS-MARIE-JOSEPH DEVÉRIA
French
1805 - 1865
PORTRAIT OF LAURENCE DAVIDSON AND HIS THREE SONS

signed Eug Deveria/Edinb and dated 1850 (center right)
oil on canvas
72¼ by 58⅛ in.
183.5 by 147.3 cm

Condition Report:
Not examined out of the frame. Lined, with minor bumping and pulling near the right lower edge. The work presents well. There are a few isolated pin dot accretions and frame abrasion and some remnants of a gold frame along the edges, with associated discoloration visible along the left edge.

Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly and remains more heavily over the signature, inscription and date. There is a 4 inch diagonal repair extending from the father's proper left shoulder to the hair of the boy at right; a couple small, circular areas of brushy, dashed retouches above the taller boy at left's head and in the foliage at upper left; a couple small dots and areas of retouching at lower left, near the lower center edge, and in the hair of the boy in red. There are a few 1⁄4 inch dashes of inpainting at center right and on the arch at upper right. Thin, very finely applied inpainting along the extreme edge of the original canvas along the right and upper center edges.
