He simultaneously began working at the Philadelphia Press, where he was employed as an illustrator in the Art Department alongside his fellow Ashcan artists George Luks (1867-1933), John Sloan (1871-1951) and William Glackens (1870-1938, see lot 77). After moving to New York in 1897, he bounced between different newspaper and magazine illustration jobs while also receiving commissions for publications and private projects. Shinn illustrated approximately 30 literary works, including several popular Charles Dickens (1812-1870) novels.
