EXCEPTIONAL EARLY TEXTILE PRINTING OF THE DECLARATION

[ translate ]

EXCEPTIONAL EARLY TEXTILE PRINTING OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.

27.75x32.25" cotton textile professionally framed to 35.5x40". c.1821. This example is slightly different from the example presented in Collins' Threads Of History as plate #58 which features a border of cannon balls, cannons and anchors. This example features a grapevine border w/repeated medallions featuring a beehive and a 13 star scroll. At center is text of the Declaration of Independence and facsimile signatures of all signers below. Framing this historic text is a band w/medallions for the original 13 states accented w/oak leaves and acorns. Portraits at top of Washington, Jefferson and Adams. Vignettes at bottom depict colonists dumping tea into Boston Harbor during the Boston Tea Party at left, and "Genl. Burgoyne Surrenders to Genl. Gates at Saratoga" at right. Scattered and faint spots of light brown toning throughout detract minimally. Otherwise we note only three tiny holes; one just left of Jefferson and two affecting the bell of the trumpet at left. VF. A high-grade example of this very desirable and rarely offered textile. The first printings of the Declaration Of Independence outside of newspapers occurred in 1819 and the depiction is similar to that rendered on this textile from only two years later. The combination of striking graphics, imposing size and being such an early printing of this important historical text make this piece a true standout in any collection.
