EXCEPTIONAL LINEN FOLDING SCREEN WITH APHORISMS AND GALANT SCENES.

South Germany.
Date: End 18th c.
Technique: Linen fabric painted in polychrome colours. Wooden mount, iron nails.
Description: The three-part paravent feature per segment each two large overlapping and strongly
dynamic rocaille cartouches with galant couples in park-like lanscapes on the front. Above
each an aphorism referring to the scene. In the centre each smaller rocaille cartouches
with shall mouldings and the titleds in French and German that define the pictorial
programme of the singular panels: "Le Jour - Der Tag / La Nuit - Die Nacht", "Le Feu - Das
Feuer / L'Eau - Das Wasser", "L'Air - Die Luft / La Terre - Die Erde". In between rich
foilage and fruits in grisaille. Verso per segment two cartouches laying above each other
with wild birds in grisaille with a few red accents.
Measurement: In total three hinged panels each: 189x62cm.
