EXCEPTIONAL RUSSIAN ICON PALEKH SCHOOL C. 1890. Finely painted on an ornate heavily incised gilt ground with faux enameling, probably a Palekh trained painter working in one of the exclusive Moscow workshops, possibly Chirikov's workshop. The lower margin with cartouche inscribed in Slavonic identifying the subject as "The Glorious Head of the Holy Prophet John the Forerunner." 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 27 cm).

Condition Report: Overall very good to excellent condition. The painting is of the highest quality (Palekh or Mstera iconographer). The paint layer is stable with no signs of losses or lifting. Retains the vast majority of the original gold leaf and the faux polychrome borders and halo are also in excellent condition. Ultra violet black light examination does reveal a few very minor and insignificant scattered retouches. One of the finest icons this firm has handled.
