EXQUISITE ENGLISH PIERCED SILVER-HILTED SMALL SWORD AND

This sword in very similar to one owned by George Washington, which can be seen in plate 222.S on page 135 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. The example shown has a very similar hilt. This is an unusually fine example with a straight, double-edged tapered blade with faceted faces and a deep partial fuller on each side. One side inscribed "T A M A S", the other "A I A L A". Solid silver hilt with date letter for 1767, as well as three other English hallmarks at the back of the knuckle bow on the left side. The guard has gadrooned edges and pierced scrolls throughout. Knuckle bow decorated with chased foliate scrolls in the center on both sides surrounded by sections of gadrooning. The ovoid pommel is pierced and has a turned capstan. The grip is wrapped with a silver band alternating with strands of braided silver wire. Complete with its original black leather scabbard with silver mounts. Throat mount is engraved with spiraling scrolls, en suite with guard, the back is inscribed "Bland / St. James". CONDITION: Very good. Blade retains a mostly bright surface with some scattered dark spotting. Hilt is unpolished and retains a dark grey patina, hallmarks are crisp. Grip excellent. Scabbard very good with a few minor scuffs, center mount is missing ring attachment. A very nice maker-marked sword of the highest quality. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
