Early 18th c. Silver-Hilted Officer's Sword
Early 18th century silver-hilted smallsword, a variety popular with high-ranking American and English officers from the French Indian War era to the Revolutionary War. Elements of the hilt and blade suggest German manufacture for the British market.
The sword exhibits a triangular, sharply tapering blade with an ornate etched design enhanced with gold gilt. Its silver hilt is cast and chased with ribboned garlands of flower-heads against pierced trelliswork, and its metal grip is bound with twisted silver wire.
A striking, impressive example assuredly owned by prominent figure in the 18th century.
[Revolutionary War, Colonial America, French & Indian War, Seven Years' War, Swords, Militaria, Armaments]
