Early 1900s Arizona / Apache / Navajo Basketry Bowl
Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Navajo or Apache, ca. 1900s to 1910s CE. A large basketry bowl that is hand-coiled with splints of native plant fibers, likely willow, sumac, or devils claw, with black and red dyes. The rim is finished with a pretty false braid. At the center is a silver button threaded through the woven coils via a leather cord - which may have plugged the starting coil hole to prevent cornmeal or sand (for sand paintings) from spilling. This is truly a fine, older antique example of Native American basketry! Size: 16.5" Diameter x 5.25" H (41.9 cm x 13.3 cm)
