Early 19th century Tibetan thangka in original mounts depicting historical Buddha Shakyamuni emanating rays of golden light, his right hand in bhumisparsha (earth-touching) mudra, his left hand holding an alms bowl. Central figure is surrounded by 16 of Buddha’s original disciples with additional figures of Budai and the one in the blue robe on the right representing the donor of the thangka. There are 2 standing attendants with alms bowls and kakhara - long staff with rattle to scare off insects, and thus prevent the carrier from stepping on them. Blue figure above central image is primordial Buddha Vajradhara, who embodies ultimate emptiness. Lower register depicts Four Heavenly Kings who also act as Direction Guardians: Virudhaka (South), Dhritarashtra (East), Virupaksha (West) and Vaishravana (North). Beautifully painted with natural mineral pigments on cotton, excellent quality painting, wonderful level of detail - see the 4 naked figures about to bathe in a lake on the left, some expected wear, overall in great condition for a 200 years old devotional object. Comes from old Washington DC collection. Painting size 22 x 15.5 inches (56 x 39 cm), mounts 39.5 x 19.5 inches (100 x 50 cm).
