Early 19th C Dated Samplers, Wareham, MA (2pc)

Pair of Samplers made by Mary Briggs of Wareham, MA (1791-1880): (1) Alphabet Sampler with letters rendered with multi-colored threads and flowers decorating the edge. Text reads: "When we devote our youth to God/tis pleasing in his eyes/A flower when offer'd in ?/is no vain sacrifice." Mary Briggs of Wareham in the 10th year of her Age 1800." Frame under glass measures 13" H x10" W, (1) Alphabet sampler with letters fashioned with multi-colored threads by Mary Briggs "Aged 13"with text "May Heavens Kind Hand Direct The Virtuous Maid/And Lead Her Only Where The Virtuous Tread." Framed under glass measures:7.5" H x 13.8" W. Note: Mary Briggs was born in Wareham, MA on 5January 1791, daughter to Perez and Mary Foster Briggs. She married Nathaniel Howard (1784-1836), who served in Sgt. Samuel Savery's Co. MA Militia in the War of 1812. They had 4 children. Mary died in Braintree on 29 December 1880 and is buried in Centre Cemetery in Wareham.
