Early 19th Century Regency Painted Toleware Chestnut Covered Urns

[ translate ]

A Pair of Regency Painted Toleware Chestnut Urns and Covers, circa 1810–1830, probably English or French, each of classic Neoclassical navette form rising from an oval stepped plinth to a boat-shaped body flanked by cast-metal lion’s head mask ring handles, the fitted covers terminating in elongated spire necks with polished finials. The exteriors feature a layered, bi-color scheme composed of an older, historically overpainted matte black reserve body atop a foundational ochre-yellow coat, exhibiting scattered flaking, superficial surface scratches, and minor paint loss consistent with age and functional use. The unpainted interiors remain in untouched condition, showing extensive, authentic pitted oxidation from historic moisture exposure. This pair carries excellent provenance, bearing an original mid-to-late twentieth-century gallery stock label from the prestigious George Gravert Antiques of Charles Street, Beacon Hill, Boston, Massachusetts. Measures 13.5 inches high, approx 7 inches wide. Overall good condition, some paint loss, please see photos.
