Early 19th c. American Oak Valuables Chest

An American oak valuables chest with five-board box construction and a three-board top, circa first half 19th century. There is a pen inscription "March 20 1849" alongside a few other indecipherable words on the top of the back board. The chest is constructed with very thick oak boards and rosehead nails, and the top is attached with inset iron hinges. Inside the chest is a three-shelf compartment encased by a sliding door and another lidded compartment.

A Bramahs brass lock was added later in the 19th century, which is missing key and locking plate on the door. The chest is set on unusual slotted wheel casters.

Measures 18" x 34 1/2" x 13".
Condition Report: The chest is in good condition, with a nicely aged patina. Top board shows shrinkage from age. The original wooden wheels were replaced with custom reproductions, though remaining original wheels are included with the box.
