New World, Bolivia, Aymara people, early 20th century CE. A piece of South American folk art, a hand-carved wooden marriage bowl. In the center, carved as part of the same piece of wood, stand two oxen joined by a yoke. Twin handles project from the sides. Dishes like these are used to collect money for the newlyweds during a wedding reception. A charming reminder of a traditional practice! Size: 9.8" L x 7.5" W x 2.9" H (24.9 cm x 19 cm x 7.4 cm)
