Early 20th C. Indonesian Timor Wood Mask w/ Goat Hair

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Timor Island, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden ancestral face mask of an abstract presentation with openwork eyes and mouth, a bar-shaped nose, and plateaued brows beneath a bulging forehead. Several leather panels are adorned with lengths of coarse goat hair and pinned across the obverse to create realistic facial hair, eye brows, and a shaggy coiffure. The verso is carved out for wear in lively celebrations. Size: 7.5" W x 11.5" H (19 cm x 29.2 cm); 23" H (58.4 cm) on included custom stand.
