Early 20th C. Indonesian Timor Wooden Mask

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Timor Island, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask depicting a stylized anthropomorphic visage with openwork eyes, a bulbous triangular nose, a rectangular mouth, and heavy brows beneath a rounded forehead. A thick handle protrudes from beneath the jaw and enables the wearer to apply and remove the mask with ease. Tufts of matted hair are applied to the face and form the eyebrows, mustache, and beard, and the mask is painted with dark-brown pigment. Size: 5.75" W x 15.375" H (14.6 cm x 39.1 cm); 18.1" H (46 cm) on included custom stand.
