Early 20th C. Japanese Taisho Stone Buddha Meditation

[ translate ]

East Asia, Japan, Taisho period, 1912 to 1926. A magnificent stone sculpture of a Buddha sitting in lotus position and holding his hands together in meditation. Enveloped in a natural hue of greyish green, the tranquil figure bows his head, his hooded visage exhibiting closed eyes, a naturalistic nose, and a gentle smile flanked by heavy nasolabial lobes. His long cloak cascades down his rotund figure, folding and falling over the stone plinth on which the divinity is seated. Extended earlobes, which symbolize his conscious rejection of the material world in favor of spiritual enlightenment, hang on both sides of his serene countenance, peaking out from his hood. A long-necked bird, perhaps a crane or a phoenix, stands on his right side, displaying a slender beak and tall legs. Size: 10.5" W x 19.75" H (26.7 cm x 50.2 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
