Early 20th C. Nepalese Wooden Guardian Figure

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden guardian figure of a characteristic anthropomorphic form depicted in a squatting position atop an integral circular plinth. The figure has its legs drawn up to its narrow hips and slender, arched back, and both hands are held together in front of the tapered chest. The bulbous head features recessed ovoid eyes, a triangular nose and mouth, and protruding ears beneath a domed forehead. The entire figure is covered in remains of dark brown earthen pigment. Guardian figures like this are typically found in or around dwellings in Nepal to ward against disease, evil spirits, and other malevolent forces. Size: 6" W x 30" H (15.2 cm x 76.2 cm)

Condition Report: Losses to areas of left ear, both legs, and plinth as shown. Nicks and stable fissures to several areas, with fading and chips to pigmentation, and light encrustations. Light remains of pigment and nice earthen deposits throughout.
