Early 20th C. Papua New Guinea Wood Mosquito Mask

[ translate ]

Papua New Guinea, Murik Lakes region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A rare, striking, carved wooden mask composed of a long, ovoid wooden panel with a large raised forehead and exceptionally long mosquito-like "probiscus". Slit eyes underneath the heavy brow complete the face. Remains of red and black stripes are visible on the proboscis and chin. Masks were a central part of religious practice for men in this region, and dance masks like this one represented powerful spirits. The eye holes on this mask suggest that it was meant to be worn rather than displayed; it would have had a basket framework that was placed over the wearer's head before engaging in any masquerades. Size: 10.5" L x 5.65" W x 20.75" H (26.7 cm x 14.4 cm x 52.7 cm); 25.75" H (65.4 cm) on included custom stand.
