Early 20th C. Solomon Islands Palm Wood Throwing Club

Oceania, Melanesia, Solomon Islands, probably Malaita Island, ca. second quarter of the 20th century CE. A fine throwing club carved from dense, caramel-hued palm wood. The hefty weapon exhibits a thick handle with a tapered shoulder, an integral discoid hand guard, and a diamond-shaped head with a vertical midrib on each side. Throwing clubs like this example were designed to be hurled forward towards its intended target while also acting as an effective hand weapon for close-quarters combat. Size: 14.875" L x 3.375" W (37.8 cm x 8.6 cm)
