Early 20th C. Thai Wood, Iron & Glass Coconut Grater

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater in the form of a recumbent rabbit. The figure has a thick body with a tab-shaped tail on the verso as well as lengthy ears folded back against the raised head. The eyes are formed from glass spheres held in place by pinned steel brackets, and a serrated iron scraping tool projects upwards from the steel-ringed mouth. Layers of original green, red, and yellow pigment are visible across the composition. Size: 17.625" L x 5" W x 7" H (44.8 cm x 12.7 cm x 17.8 cm).

Condition Report: Minor nicks and abrasions to base, body, head, and scraping tool, with light oxidation to iron scraping tool, and fading to original pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice patina throughout.
