Early 20th century terracotta pot (1920's) - Nupe - Nigeria (No Reserve Price)

[ translate ]

A large antique (circa 1900-1920) African water, cooking or storage pot. This is made from decorated, unglazed Terracotta clay, and is thought to come from the Nupe people Nigeria. As such it is a rare, hand made piece. The terracotta is a rich red/brown, and the black areas are probably from the initial firing, or from use over a fire for many years. This gives a wonderful colour and patina to the terracotta. It has a patterned texture of incised decoration and is in very good condition. The round bottom is so that it could be carried on the heads of the women of the tribe to collect water, and is meant to sit in a raffia or cloth ring. It does stand up on its round base, and does not need a support. Inside we still see remains of stored food. It would look stunning as a display piece in a kitchen or dining room, or as part of a collection.
A great decorative piece for a rustic, eclectic or even contemporary decor scheme, with white or stone surfaces/walls.
