Early Arctic Exploration: "Journal of a Voyage for the Discovery of a North-West Passage" by William Parry
Books

Scarce printing of William E. Parry's seminal volume "Journal of a Voyage for the Discovery of a North-West Passage From the Atlantic to the Pacific; Performed in the Years 1819-20, in His Majesty's Ships HECLA and GRIPER, under orders of William Edward Parry, R.N., F.R.S. and Commander of the Expedition." (London: John Murray, 1821). This handsome volume includes four folding maps tipped within, each 24" x 10 ½", paginated in Roman numerals but 310pp., small 4to (8" x 10.5"), half leather over marbled paper boards with marbled edges and endpapers, several engraved illustrations within the text, as well as an appendix titled "A Supplement to the Appendix, containing the Zoology, Botany, Geology, &c., of the Arctic Regions, will be published on the 1st of June." Spine bears gilt title and five bands, with gilt anchors and other ornamentation within each compartment. Owner's bookplate affixed to first free endpaper.

This volume exhibits light wear to leather and bumping to corners with a few scuffs to marble boards, while interior pages are quite clean.

Sir William Edward Parry (1790-1855) was an officer in the Royal Navy and a key player in the discovery of the North-West Passage as the first to discover a route through Lancaster Sound.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
