Early Blown "Comet Wine" Bottle

[ translate ]

Early Blown "Comet Wine" Bottle, France, c. 1811, tall olive green bottle with straight sides and tooled mouth, high kick up, the shoulder with an applied seal depicting a star with a comet trail, laid paper label below reads "Vieux Cognac/1811," ht. 12 3/4 in.

Note: The Great Comet of 1811 was visible for an unusually long time, approximately 260 days. Its existence was recorded by a wide variety of astronomers and literary figures. 1811 was, coincidentally, a particularly good year for wine and merchants marketed "Comet Wine" for several years afterwards in recognition of the remarkable astronomical event.
