Second edition. (Finished in January 1587... at the expenses of John Harison, George Bishop, Rafe Newberie, Henite Denham, and Thomas Woodcocke. At London printed [by Henry Denham] in Aldersgste street at the signe of the Starre.) Folio, 19th century three-quarters calf and cloth; scuffed, joints, spine ends, and raised bands rubbed. Black letter, woodcut title pages. Lacking the front blank in volume 1, the back blank in volume 2, and the last two leaves in volume 3, cancels may have been supplied from an 18th century edition. Some dust smudging and repairs (at margins) to the general title page of the first volume, the title page of the third volume dust soiled, chipped at printed border, repaired and mounted to a later paper sheet, dust smudging and some dampstaining primarily in margins of leaves towards the front of volume 1, the back of volume 2, and the front and back of volume 3, but otherwise internally generally clean, worming at upper gutters (and occasionally adjoining areas) of The Historie of Scotland and The Table in volume 2 with some loss of printing.
Vol. 1: "The historie of England" has separate title page, pagination, and register.
Vol. 2: title page reads "The second volume of chronicles..."
Vol. 2: "The Irish historie..." has separate title page and pagination; p. 61 of the previous section is printed on A1; the "Irish historie" title page is a singleton, bound between A1 and A2.
Vol. 2: "The description of Scotland..." has separate pagination, register, and a title page dated 1585, within this series, "The historie of Scotland" has a separate title page dated 1585.
Vol. 3: has title "The third volume of chronicles..."
Huntington Library, Chronicling Holinshed's Chronicles: "...no two copies of this work have the same text... different copies offer different structures of cancellation... it is not clear that any copy has survived intact... at least three Holinshed 'repair lists' appeared between 1723 & 1728... a legacy of different possible structures for Holinshed's Chronicles [has been left]." The set offered above exhibits most of the excisions but none of the 18th century facsimile leaves.
