Early Thai Seated Buddha, Hands in Bhumisparsha Mudra

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $300**

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A fine brass Buddha seated in lotus position upon a triangular pedestal and wearing a robe that drapes over his left shoulder. He places his hands in the Bhumisparsha mudra, with his right hand over the right knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward, while his left hand lies in his lap with the palm upright. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as Buddha defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. The elegant deity presents with a tranquil visage and characteristically long ears to represent the wealth of his previous life as Prince Gautama, as they have been stretched from wearing large earrings. In this example, he is shown after his enlightenment, as is evidenced by his large ushnisha, the pointed projection from the top of his head that symbolizes his newfound knowledge. Size: 5.5" L x 12.1" W x 16.6" H (14 cm x 30.7 cm x 42.2 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Mr. and Mrs. Eric Sloan collection
