Early medieval Iron Bandhelm - Migration of Nations - 13×18.5×23.5 cm - (1)

Bandhelm, Central Europe, Migration Period, 5th / 6th century Iron helmet, type St. Vid/Narona The calotte with rivets, composed of two halves and the 8 cm wide vertex band, is attached to the completely circumferential headband. The apex band made of one piece, which has no middle ridge and widens slightly towards the headband, is connected on both sides by rivets (these are partially corroded) with half-shells. The headband is also fixed by rivets, which are only partially recognisable. The calotte is slightly pressed in at the upper area. The chain hood (not original) and head are for display purposes only. They are not part of the auction Typical helmet from the migration period. Several helmets of this type were found in the region of St. Vid/-Narona (today's Croatia) . . The helmets layered on top of each other were apparently a sign of wealth of the buried. This form of band helmets can be found both in troops of the late Roman Empire (auxiliary troops) as well as in their Germanic and Alani opponents. Condition: III - (preserved, some small flaws amended) From an old English collection, then in the art trade, Artemis Gallery, USA (2016) . The helmet was legally acquired by me in the art trade.
