Eastern Roman Empire, Eudocia, wife of Theodocius II, Died in 460 CE. Constantinople Mint. Gold solidus. Obverse: AEL EVDO - CIA AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: Latin cross pattée within wreath; CONOB. Her original name was Athenais as she was born in Athens. Before she was married to Theodosius II, she was baptized a Christian and changed her name to Eudocia. Accused of adultery and facing a challenge to her position by Theodosius’ influential sister Pulcheria, she returned to Jerusalem c. 443 CE and remained there for the rest of her life.
