Eastern Roman Empress Eudocia Gold Tremissis

Eastern Roman Empire, Eudocia, wife of Theodocius II, Died in 460 CE. Constantinople Mint. Gold solidus. Obverse: AEL EVDO - CIA AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: Latin cross pattée within wreath; CONOB. Her original name was Athenais as she was born in Athens. Before she was married to Theodosius II, she was baptized a Christian and changed her name to Eudocia. Accused of adultery and facing a challenge to her position by Theodosius’ influential sister Pulcheria, she returned to Jerusalem c. 443 CE and remained there for the rest of her life. While there, she directed the rebuilding of Jerusalem's fortifications and the construction of several splendid churches. Goodacre 6. RIC 335; Depeyrot 72/2. Size: 0.55" W (1.4 cm); 1.34 grams
