Eastern Roman Glass Bottle

Rome, Eastern Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. late 2nd to 4th century CE. A fine mold-formed bottle comprised of semi-translucent, pale-green glass. The bottle is defined by a lightly-concave base, a spherical body with a lightly-depressed shoulder, a funnel neck, and a smooth rim. The body and neck are covered in faint wheel-cut striations which are barely visible. Thick encrustations cover the interior, most of the mouth, and the base, though brilliant layers of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence imbue the vessel with a burst of color. Size: 3.55" W x 5.125" H (9 cm x 13 cm).

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Slg. H.J.S.P. collection, Hessen, acquired from the 1960s to 1970s

Condition Report: Minor abrasions to neck, body, and base, with light weathering film, and thick encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits as well as fabulous silver and rainbow iridescence throughout.
