Eastern Roman Glass Unguentarium - Colorful Iridescence

Rome, Eastern Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A beautiful mold-formed unguentarium comprised of semi-translucent, turquoise-hued glass with a planar base, a bell-shaped body, a tall cylindrical neck, and a wide mouth with an everted, in-folded rim. Though the surface is covered in thick calcifications, bright areas of stunning rainbow-hued iridescence shine through and elegantly complement the vessel's blue-green color. Glass vessels like this example were typically used to store precious scented oils. Size: 3.7" W x 5.875" H (9.4 cm x 14.9 cm).

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Slg. H.J.S.P. collection, Hessen, acquired from the 1960s to 1970s

Condition Report: Minor abrasions and nicks to rim, base, and body, with light calcifications, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits as well as wonderful rainbow-hued iridescence throughout. Old inventory label beneath base.
