[ translate ]

Eastern Woodlands Native American longbow, ca. 17th-18th c. Coniferous wood, possibly juniper.
From the Collector's Notes: The Eastern Woodlands bow was generally 60-67 in long. Many of the Eastern Woodlands people obtained firearms and and had all but abandoned the bow and arrow by about 1725. Few examples of longbows from this time period have survived. Two Powhatan bows collected in the Virginia colony in 1665 survive and are now in the collection of Ashmolean museum. Similar to this bow, they measure 67-68 1/2 in. Two more bows are at the Peabody Museum: the Sudbury bow, which was, according to its inscription, "taken from" a Wampanoag man in 1660 and an Algonquin bow collected by Pierre Van Courtland in 1728. Both measure approximately 67 in. Dimensions: Height: 65 3/4 in x width: 1 1/2 in x depth: 1 in.
