Ebisu jizai 自在 (pot hook) - Keyaki wood - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)
Massive solid keyaki wooden, so-called, Ebisu jizai 自在 (pot hook) . Called that way after the shape of Ebisu’s hat. Ebisu 恵比須 is the Japanese god of fishermen and luck, one of the Seven gods of Fortune 七福神 (Shichifukujin) .
These hooks were traditionally suspended from a sturdy beam above the sunken hearth using a rope. With an adjustable hook attached to is, to hold a kettle on the desired height over the hearth.
Made of precious ‘Keyaki’ wood (Zelkova - Japanese oak) varnished in a deep dark brown hue with a lively woodgrain.
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912) .
