Ecole Française (XIXème)- Diana The Huntress

[ translate ]

\Artist: Ecole Française (XIXème)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 63_54_3_cm
Diana is a goddess in Roman and Hellenistic religion, primarily considered a patroness of the countryside, hunters, crossroads, and the Moon. She is equated with the Greek goddess Artemis, and absorbed much of Artemis' mythology early in Roman history, including a birth on the island of Delos to parents Jupiter and Latona, and a twin brother, Apollo although she had an independent origin in Italy. Her place in classicism has inspired poets and artists and there are several very well known paintings depicting her theme such as the “Diane the Huntress” by Giuseppe Cesari – Capitoline Museums and “Diana Huntress” by Bartolomeo Passerotti – Musée du Louvre. This oil on canvas painting is by a fine hand who captures the goddess close to nature with a somewhat tactile affinity with the dove representing closeness and peace with nature . There is an interesting inscription on the verso with the name A Sermand . Condition: The painting is most definitely mid to late 19th century French school and it was acquired from a private collection in France. The frame is perfectly in keeping with the painting although from the 20th century . Overall the painting is in reasonably good condition given it's age, and has not yet been relined and would appear to be in decent structural condition with no significant wear to the canvas and no woodworm or deterioration to the original stretcher. The tension of the canvas is acceptable and in our opinion the painting can be hung and enjoyed without any intervention . A very collectable piece with a distinctly classical theme .
