The present three panels originally formed part of a larger altarpiece or polyptych, centred on a Calvary and flanked by three scenes from the Passion of Christ on either side. In 1952, after the J. W. Mengelberg auction at S J Maak van Waay, the ensemble was dismantled into seven separate panels and sold individually.
The left wing comprised scenes of the Flagellation, Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the Circumcision, while the right wing depicted Christ Crowned with Thorns, the Via Crucis, and Golgotha.
The two panels with the Circumcision of Christ in the Temple, and the Christ in Gethsemane are now at the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Ghent (inv. 1953-Q and 1953-R).
